about

Produced and annotated by Charlotte Heth, a member of the Cherokee nation of Oklahoma and a noted ethnomusicologist.

This disc offers ceremonial and social music of the Navajo Indians from the Four Corners area of northern Arizona, northwestern New Mexico, and southeastern Utah. As members of the largest Indian nation in both population and land area, many Navajos still speak only their native language, and most others, although they may be bilingual and bicultural, still cherish their songs, dances, and rituals. Woven into the fabric of everyday life, Navajo songs not only reinforce ancient beliefs but also serve as entertainment.

"I will cop to initially judging a book by its cover with this record. Pictured prominently on its cover is Shiprock, a 1600 foot Monadnock in the Four Corners Region of the American Southwest, and one of the most beautiful things I've seen in my life. Travelling through the Four Corners, much of the time within the Navajo Nation, was a beautiful experience and I'm really happy that their music (which I was not previously hip to) is presented in such loving detail with this release. " - Sam Weinberg, Autumn 2021 Artist Picks
