about

The BTMSQ is an all-female saxophone quartet with drummer, named after the big band saxophonist Billy Tipton, a woman who lived as a man for more than fifty years. With a repertory that ranges from Eastern European funk and jazz, to New Orleans jump-groove, klezmer and punk, BTMSQ creates some of the wildest sounds ever to come out of a sax quartet.

On this, their New World debut, they strut their formidable chops on thirteen (mostly) originals, running the spectrum from funky, swinging, up-tempo romps (Likka Law, Tri Monk, Disgruntled Postal Worker, Vorrei Dire Due Parole, Soleil) through languid, mid-tempo numbers (In Effect, Boise) to the moody, reflective Crna Machka and a tenderly rendered arrangement of a Hendrix/Miles Davis hybird (All Manic). Completing this musical gumbo is a swinging rendition of a traditional Cajun tune (Belle).

"This group of women don't fool around; they're gritty, not pretty, playing hardcore jazz with an edge. They honk, funk, scream and slow dirge, and come laughingly back on a disc full of ambitious original material. This Box is a complete package." -JazzTimes
